In the Land Down Under, summer is at its peak. Where I live, daytime temperatures are routinely in the 30’s (Celsius) and nighttime temperatures are often around 20 degrees. Sometime back in 2025 I made a random decision to apply for a job. Full time for a term. I haven’t really interacted with this school before, so everything about it is unknown. What I do know is that I am heading back to mainstream-type schooling after several years working in an alternative model. I will be dealing with younger students, a fuller timetable and many more demands on my time.
Today is the day I join all the other new teachers to be issued keys, laptops and, hopefully, finalised timetables. We will get the grand tour and be indoctrinated into the way this school operates. I love the way schools all think they are unique, when really they are all the same. As I type this, I am wondering, not for the first time, if I have made a big mistake.
Honestly, big mistake is probably over dramatising it a bit. But my life is definitely going to be a lot busier and a lot more structured for the next eleven weeks. At least I will start the year with a great tan.
