The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth. On 2 April Mr Jones and I boarded a cruise ship with about 2500 of our closest friends. We were bound for San Francisco via Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii. Over the next 22 days we did what people on a cruise ship do best; eat, watch entertainment, play silly games, eat, sleep, sunbathe and just to be sure we weren’t hungry, eat some more.

It took a few days for us to change mindsets from the incredibly busy couple of weeks leading up to this journey. But we got there in the end. Life in a cruise boat is like stepping into an alternate universe. Being disconnected from the internet and regular routines and friends is sometimes disturbing but it does help to quiet the mind.

Of course there were towel animals every day. Sometimes not sure what they were but they were all cute.

About four days after we left Brisbane we were looking forward to planned adventures in Fiji. The Australian passengers were all a little ambivalent about Fiji. Most of us had been there before. The Americans on the other hand were keyed up. To them Fiji seemed exotic. However Tropical Cyclone Vaianu had other ideas. We skipped that port and continued on to Papaeete. Now it was the Australians turn to be excited. Actually most people were excited. Ten days on a boat without walking on land is a quite a while.

Papaeete was picturesque but incredibly busy with some very interesting traffic. I am glad I don’t have to drive there. Neighbouring Moorea was much more like the idyllic tropical island. We spent a delightful day sight seeing followed by a swim on the beach and a sip or twenty of a local juice and alcohol concoction.

In 2018 Mr Jones and I visited Honolulu so apart from an obligatory walk on the beach we were not concerned with any particular activities. Sitting in McDonald’s we discovered a nearby zoo and took the opportunity to see flamingoes in the flesh for the first time.

Of course there were also a few naughty photo opportunities.

As I type this I am in our San Francisco hotel. We have been very busy increasing our step count average and enjoying a different city on the other side of the world. Hopefully I will be able to post another update very soon.
